I Am Malala: The Girl Who Stood up for Education

An Insightful Read Into Life Under Taliban Influence
I bought this book thinking it would be a light easy read with some insight into life as a girl under the Taliban. Instead it was a incredible history lesson and insight into the lives of all who live under the Taliban Rule! What an incredibly powerful girl, one who did not choose this path to be a spokesperson for all the less fortunate children, especially girls in Pakistan. The courage she has exhibited throughout her life is amazing and a lesson to all. She sees what has to be changed, such as getting education for all so that their country can grow and be productive, and procuring advocates for those who have no voice – at any cost.

Then I was amazed at the role her parents have had in raising this amazing girl. A father who empowered her at a young age to fight for what she believes in. It made me reflect on the power I have as a parent to help my children grow into powerful young adults.

She has been on the news so much – it brings up amazing conversations for my daughter and I, ones that every parent should have regarding equality, choice and the power one person can have. If you like this book I also recommend the Breadwinner by Deborah Ellis. Another wonderful story about the trials and tribulations of children in Afghanistan. An eye opener for North American residents.
