History in the Making
Star-date: May 13, 2013. Commander Hadfield returns from an almost six month stint on the International Space Station. He is the first Canadian to take command of the ISS and I would say, the first astronaut (besides Neil Armstrong) to make space travel seem cool.
Everyday he wowed us on Twitter with his breathtaking photos and educational/funny videos on YouTube. He became an internet sensation which, if my boys don’t appreciate at the moment…they will shortly.
Jackie and I took the kidlets to the Telus World Of Science to watch the live feed from NASA TV on the IMAX screen. They handed out posters and stickers (which I might steal from one of them..) and showed the Space Station IMAX movie from 2002. This was fantastic, as it provided the background our kids needed (and us too) to truly understand the work they are doing waaay up there.
One incredible quote I took away last night, and one I hope my kids did too was;
Decide in your heart of hearts what really excites and challenges you…
…And start moving your life in that direction
Every decision you make, from what you eat to what you do with your time tonight…
…turns you into who you are tomorrow, and the day after that.
Look at who you want to be, and start sculpting yourself into that person.
You may not get exactly where you thought you’d be…
…But you will be doing things that suit you in a profession you believe in.
Don’t let life randomly kick you into the adult you don’t want to become.
Commander, Expedition 35,
International Space Station
You may look at Cmdr. Hadfield as an overachiever: mechanical engineer, fighter pilot, test pilot, masters degree of aviation systems, astronaut, and an amazing musician. What I see is a man with passion and dedication, if I can use his thoughtful words to inspire my children, they will be the better for it!
Thank you Commander Hadfield.
